Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.


 

The opportunity

The Supervisor, Government Affairs will facilitate the IESO's ongoing relationship with the government regarding initiatives that support our organization's vision, strategic plans, and legislative objectives. In addition to leading the Government Affairs team, a key part of this position will involve recommending and developing appropriate engagement plans for the IESO to ensure that business strategies and legislative objectives are met. The Supervisor will collaborate with senior internal staff, key industry players, and senior government staff in the development and implementation of initiatives. The Supervisor will also maintain knowledge of industry developments that could be of interest to the company identify and assess new initiatives and opportunities related to the company's corporate and legislative objectives. 

 

 

What you'll do

  • Responsible for building and managing an effective working relationship between the IESO and government with the Senior Manager, Director, VP C&CR and CEO.
  • Meet/communicate/confer with senior staff from various business units on issues that affect IESO business and legislative objectives and the current policy/legislative/regulatory climate in Ontario to develop and inform strategies and action plans while relying on legislative policies, procedures, and protocols as well as an understanding of the policy drivers. 
  • Present IESO business objectives before appropriate government staff using in-person meetings, oral/written material, relying on superior ability to write clearly and concisely, a mastery of legislative and regulatory policies, procedures, and protocols, an understanding of the IESO’s business objectives, and a keen ability to gain consensus among diverse groups to meet the company’s business plan and legislative objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, government staff, and key industry players on the development and implementation of initiatives.
  • Work with various internal and external personnel to resolve problems of strategy where differences of opinion may exist and influence others to a course of action suitable to the IESO’s corporate objectives.
  • Provide professional guidance and support to IESO staff in identifying trends, risks, uncertainties, and actions required to ensure business plan objectives are met.
  • Manage and coach the Government Affairs team to ensure a highly effective group that will facilitate the IESO’s coordinated approach to government engagement.

 

 

What you need to succeed

 

Required

  • Successful completion of a university degree and/or post graduate degree in business, political science, public administration, or communications; or knowledge of government, communications, regulatory affairs and stakeholder engagement gained through an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Relevant experience in government, communications, regulatory affairs, stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and leadership qualities
  • Experience working under tight timelines and significant pressure
  • Proven ability to work with confidential and sensitive information
  • Evidence of communication, negotiation and presentation skills to present complex results in an understandable fashion, and to prepare effective reports and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment where different opinions and perspectives have to be managed, negotiated, and resolved diplomatically
  • Proven track record of developing trust, mutual respect and co-operative working relationships
  • Exemplifies comprehensive appreciation of, and strong personal commitment to, customer needs and corporate objectives
  • A strong commitment to continuous improvement principles
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and reasoning skills to understand business processes and risks, plan work programs, execute work programs, and make observations and recommendations for improvement

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Toronto location.
