The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

 

The opportunity

 

Join the Competitive Programs and Ancillary Services Management team.  Ensure the future reliability of the power system by contracting additional generations resources through contracts and competitive programs as well as the reliability services required for the Ontario power system.

 

What you'll do

 

  • Manage and monitor project processes, timelines, budgets, and coordination of resources and staff to  ensure timely progress and desired quality and escalate issues and impediments to appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
  • Take a leadership role in evaluating and solving technical and commercial issues associated with projects, including during applicable negotiation phases.
  • Recommend appropriate procurement processes and manage their design, development and implementation in accordance with the project requirements and adopted IESO processes in order to procure identified supply and storage resources.
  • Manage and coordinate the operation of procurement processes, oversee contract offers and contract negotiation with supply resource developers, as appropriate, and execute contracts for such resources.
  • Act as one of the IESO’s key spokespersons on energy supply and storage and lead stakeholder engagement activities with policy makers, manufacturers, industry, planning staff, municipalities, Aboriginal communities, general public, etc. leading a holistic approach to renewable development with regards to price, economic development, etc.
  • Act as the issue expert  to advise senior management, as well as senior government policy and political officials, on  matters  related to supply and storage resources being procured or managed by the  IESO; this involves acquiring and maintaining a broad knowledge base, and maintaining membership and participation in related organizations.
  • Staff – hiring, developing, and managing Business Analysts, as required 
  • Oversee the sourcing, securing, and management of external consultants (e.g., legal, economic, technical, etc.), as required.
  • Managing project teams comprising of other IESO business unit staff and external staff, as required.
  • I Interface with  IESO departments such as Planning,Law and Aboriginal Relations, , Conservation and Corporate Communications, Corporate Services, and other departments; externally with Government and its ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Energy and Hydro One, as appropriate.
  • Remain flexible and available to assist with other projects within the department or in other  IESO departments.

 

What you need to succeed

 

Education:

The education required to complete the responsibilities associated with the position is typically obtained through 4 years of university training.

 

Experience:

  • Electricity industry experience – a solid grounding in policy, economics, and technical aspects of electricity supply and demand programs and products
  • Electricity generation experience – generation project development and demand management projects, and associated procurement processes
  • Ontario electricity sector – knowledge of the Ontario electricity sector is essential
  • Procurement – knowledge of procurement principles and processes, public procurement experience is an asset
  • Project management – proven project management ability
  • Counterparty focus – strong negotiating skills with a focus on problem solving; demonstrated ability to work with contract counterparties in a challenging environment
  • Environmental sustainability – knowledge of the environmental impacts of electricity generation
  • Ability to work effectively within a group and must be able to effectively coordinate with IESO staff and external stakeholders
  • Resource management – ability to deliver results through others
  • The minimum level of experience for the incumbent to perform at a satisfactory level of proficiency is 8-10 years including the period of adjustment on the job itself

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga or Toronto, ON location.
