Who we are
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The opportunity
The Senior Counsel provides high-level professional legal services to the organization, offering strategic guidance, legal advice, and managing legal and regulatory matters. They play a crucial role in policy and business development while ensuring legal compliance and minimizing risk exposure.
What you’ll do
- Supports operations of the IESO by providing legal advice on a wide range of matters.
- Manages strategically important matters requiring sophisticated legal knowledge and experience.
- Conducts legal research, advice and opinions on files and seeing them to completion and also supervises less experienced counsel.
- Acts as an integral part of internal and external project teams.
- Manages outside counsel, ensuring quality, cost control, and customer service.
- Contributes to the development of legal department processes and knowledge management.
- Assists in optimizing legal department functions and processes.
What you need to succeed
- Mastery in legal skills with significant experience in one or more specialty areas (e.g., corporate commercial law, intellectual property law).
- Excellent skills in negotiation and drafting.
- Superior ability to articulate legal issues and advocate positions.
- Strong organizational, responsiveness, and time management skills.
- Ability to identify risks and provide strategic legal and business-related advice.
- Strives for excellence and makes decisions based on the ultimate good of the organization.
- Works in partnership with others and supports cross-functional decisions.
- Generally 8 to 12 years of relevant legal experience; knowledge of electricity or energy-related law is preferred, along with a willingness to expand knowledge in this area.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga, Toronto, or Oakville location.
