Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

The Opportunity

 

The Analyst, Contracts is accountable to the Supervisor, Contract Management in the Legal Resources and Corporate Governance (LRCG) division of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The Analyst, Contracts will primarily focus on contracts associated with renewable energy facilities (e.g., solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.) and will provide administrative support for the management of large, complex contracts. The Analyst, Contracts will provide support to ensure that contract management requirements are fulfilled and that documents and processes are followed to provide the best possible value to the IESO, Ontario’s power system, and Ontario’s ratepayers and taxpayers.

 

 

What you'll be doing

 

  • Support and administer contract processes, ensuring that all obligations are fulfilled in accordance with the contract requirements, culminating in successful commercial operation of facilities and post-commercial operation compliance.
  • Regularly use and maintain online contract database to manage ongoing contractual matters and to ensure compliance.
  • Support Senior Analysts with contract issues by meeting with IESO staff, respective contract counterparties, and when applicable, external agencies/organizations (e.g., Local Distribution Companies, transmitters, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of standard principles, strategies and processes for existing contracts.
  • Advise on systems and procedures and recommend changes to support the successful management of contracts.
  • Assist with the development of standard documents/templates to be used by contract counterparties and make recommendations to improve internal processes and where absent develop the necessary tools.
  • Support the development and testing of information systems associated with contracts and work flow processes.
  • Reach out to contract counterparties to provide support in online contract database related tasks.
  • Interface with others – internally with the Legal, Planning, Conservation, Resource Adequacy, Corporate Services, and other IESO Departments; externally with Government and its agencies, such as the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Local Distribution Companies, as appropriate, and with respective contract counterparties.
  • Conduct research on topics and issues related to electricity supply resources and renewable energy generation.
  • Assist with projects within LRCG or in other IESO departments. This includes facilitating meetings with other IESO departments.
  • Other duties or responsibilities may be assigned.

 

 

What you will need to succeed

 

Required

  • Successful completion of successful completion of 4 years of University education in a technical or business area of study (e.g. commerce, mathematics, engineering, environmental sciences, etc.), or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Requires experience and knowledge of:  
    • Ontario’s electricity sector including the renewable energy sector and regulatory environment

    • technical aspects of electricity generation, including renewable forms of electricity generation (e.g. solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.)

    • various generation contracts used by the IESO, including the rationale and importance for each, as well as the various provisions in contracts

    • working with contract counterparties in a challenging environment

    • business principles and processes as it relates to contract management and complaince

    • successful execution of strategies  

    • translating business requirements

    • planning, organizational and financial skills

    • analysis and problem solving

    • contracts, financial and information systems

    • working within a group and effectively coordinating with IESO staff and external stakeholders

    • demonstrating excellent oral, written and presentation skills

    • demonstrating a detail orientation and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, challenging environment

 

The minimum level of experience for the incumbent to perform at a satisfactory level of proficiency is 2 years and above, including the period of adjustment on the job itself.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario. When working in the office, you will be located at our Toronto location.
