Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come. 

This role is a part of Operations and works across the IESO to modernize the connection process through the implementation of an ambitious modernization roadmap that will enhance processes, tools, training and governance in place today.

Supervisor, Roadmap Implementation assumes a leadership and ownership role of the change program that is modernizing how we manage the integration of system changes to the power system. Duties strategic planning and prioritization, tracking implementation progress and reporting to senior leadership and relevant external parties. Formal and informal leadership, development and coaching with implementation contributors is required.

What you’ll do


In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

Carry out supervisory responsibilities including:

  • Prepare business plans, work programs and budgets estimates in order to achieve business objectives;
  • Execute work programs, analyze expenditures and performance achieved relative to budget and objectives;
  • Provide supervision, guidance and mentorship to integration staff, including work assignment and ensuring quality, quantity, timeliness of work to achieve business objectives;
  • Provide clear expectations, performance measures, feedback and constructive actions, as required;
  • Make recommendations on staff development and training, hiring, discharge, promotions and performance management;
  • Ensure staff output effectively meets business needs and goals, ensuring quality, quantity and timeliness of work to achieve business objectives;  Receive limited direction from the Senior Manager or Senior Director in very broad terms related to assigned areas of work.  Obtain necessary inputs or data and develop solutions to assigned tasks. Produce necessary documentation to monitor and track, to recommunicate change, or to substantiate recommendations.  Actively identify, analyze and mitigate risks before they turn into issues, carrying out regular reviews and liaising with IESO and/or external staff on a one-to-one basis as required.

Undertake supervisory responsibilities in the following areas: 

  • Oversee the Roadmap Implementation and its respective internal and external contributors.
  • Manage the IESO’s external consultants, including procurement, budget, work planning and execution.
  • Review connection assessment documentation, market rules, market manuals and converse with subject matter experts to develop connection requirements.
  • Manage internal and external stakeholder engagements to understand diverse perspectives and facilitate alignment.
  • Support and manage customer issues to expedite their resolution within the IESO.  Work with subject matter experts, consultants and customers to achieve an acceptable resolution.
  • Supervise the delivery of change to processes, tools, documentation and training, including enhancements to  the registration system, and support continuous improvement opportunities. 

Supervise and maintain knowledge of market rules for the purposes of identifying the obligations, and manage the process of providing customers and others in the IESO with updates, interpretations and impacts as needed.

Supervise and lead the coordination, technical leadership and business systems expertise to internal and external customers regarding, generally more complex, projects and system changes.

  • Represent Operations for items arising from IT change and release management.
    Identify the objectives of business processes, assess the risk of not meeting those objectives and identify process controls to mitigate risk as appropriate.
    Document process objectives, tasks, risks and controls in summary documentation (e.g. risk-control matrices).
  • Make recommendations and implement changes on streamlining tasks and procedures. Contribute to the enhancement/development of existing/new business processes, training packages or guides for participants.

Supervise and support process improvements and execution in Operations; including the use of change management techniques to implement changes to repairing of guides and procedures to support the processes consistent with business needs, market rules or other IESO-controlled documents.

Establish and administer a stakeholder group, as required, to provide input and recommendations regarding the connection process.

Exercise training to staff as needed

Perform other duties as required.

Role Requirements

 
Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills. 
To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

  • Academic training in business, commerce, information technology, or engineering to understand and apply the technical/business/legislative parameters governing the energy industry and market place. 
  • Knowledge of communication techniques and theories at a level to develop comprehensive instructions, policies, practices, and procedures for effective communication to customers in relation to the complaints, inquiries, advice and guidance on Market Participant requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Requires lengthy exposure to the overall power system operation through progressive training in an appropriate technical field.  Requires specific experience as applicable to the particular specialty of the group. Experience will be related to the fields of: 

    • Change management
    • Registration of energy resources for market operations
    • Secure operation of bulk power system
    • Technical and non-technical requirements of IESO operational needs, and an understanding of participant capability 
    • A broad organizational awareness, including corporate practices
  • Background experience will include: 
    • Electrical equipment design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components
    • Familiarity with power system and market operation, practices, and policies
    • Familiarity with IESO’s markets, practices, policies, and market rules
  • Project Management
  • Experience in dealing with customers (internal & external to the IESO) in a professional and service focused environment.  
  • Experience to effectively deal with complex inquiries as well as sensitive situations.  
  • Experience with diffusing irate callers by utilizing various soft skill techniques is essential.
  • Experience in methods of discovery and or investigation, which involves having good analytical, reasoning and customer relations skills to resolve related problems or sensitive questions.
  • Experience in a customer service and change management environments.  
  • Familiarity with various customer-service and change management related responsibilities, functions and their interrelationships, and with the contacts and sources of information involved.
  • Project manager skills to successfully manage change management.

A period of over 8 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
