Who we are

 

Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come. 
This role is a part of the Information and Technology Services Business Unit. This is a union job.

This role will provide solution and development support for metering and settlement solutions that are critical to the IESO.

 


What you’ll do

 

In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

  • Develop integrated computer based information solutions for business and operations processes for the reliable operation of the power system, operation of the IESO Administered Market, and for other corporate needs of the IESO. Conduct analysis of customer requirements, the production of functional specifications, and the development of a satisfactory information solution (ie, impacting areas of software, hardware, communications and business processes).
  • Oversee the evolution of existing information systems and tools related to the market operation, supply, security and settlement services related to the management of the power system and other corporate requirements by conducting/developing/monitoring enhancements to provide additional functionality, improved reliability/maintainability and problem correction.
  • Identify opportunities for information solutions that will provide effective and economic benefits for customers. Address the total solution in terms of communications, data sources, software tools, integration with existing functions, user interfaces, algorithms, etc.
  • Monitor and oversee assigned projects for the development and expansion of information systems and tools. Provide periodic or limited work assignment, organizing, scheduling and checking work of others delegated to assist in specific work projects.
  • Provide project management support to projects or teams involved in the expansion and improvement of information systems and tools.
  • Maintain a close customer relationship and be alert to identify potential improvements to existing systems and to propose new information system requirements.
  • Participate in the development of strategic plans and standards.
  • Act as a teacher or mentor to associates to advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills within their respective area of expertise.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

In a typical day, you will provide support for service requests, incidents, or problems; support planning and implementation of coordinated changes and release; provide advice and council for customers, stakeholders, and peers; and, support strategic projects.


 

 

Role Requirements

 

Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills. 
To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

  • Requires a strong academic knowledge of computer science and associated subjects, including a strong theoretical knowledge pertinent to the specialist areas of the technical or business operations of the electricity market and administration processes related to the power system delivery.  Requires communication skills, including report or business presentation skills.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline or by having the equivalent education.
  • Requires significant exposure to the overall power system operation and electricity market operation as might be acquired through experience in positions related to the power system operation and market operation.  Requires specific experience as applicable to the particular specialty of the group.  Background should be related to the fields of:
    • (a) utilization of generation resources, including including interconnections, (b) secure operation of bulk power system, (c) reliability, (d) means of operation including control equipment, staffing, techniques and procedures for the practice of operating, (e) market entry, maintenance and exit (f) bidding and market information management (g) market scheduling and dispatch, (h) metering and market settlement, (i) billing and market funds administration, (j) prudential risk management (k) forecast and assessment (l) market administration such as dispute resolution, waiver process, compliance and surveillance, (m) Financial accounting and reporting, (n) Payroll services.
    • Expertise can be in the areas of (1) design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components, (2) analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solving power system problems, (3) familiarity with power system operation, practices and policies, (4) district operating and system requirements, (5) concepts of power system operation including technical features of equipment and facilities, high-tension transmission and system interchange between systems, (6) familiarity with the Market Rules, (7) design concepts for market scheduling and dispatch algorithm and equations, (8) familiarity with market and internal bid-to-bill business processes and procedures, (9) design concept for financial risk management at the IESO administered market level (10) familiarity with various market administration processes and procedures, (11) familiarity with financial and pay services business processes and procedures and information analysis reporting systems
  • A period of over eight years, up to and including ten years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
