Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. - How the IESO administers the physical market for participants to buy and sell energy, and a financial market for buying and selling transmission rights (TRs). Settlements is responsible for collecting funds from buyers and distributing these to sellers.

Develop the business processes, procedures and system/tool requirements for settlement of the IESO-Administered Market. Develop the associated documentation. Provide an engineering/technical interface between the IESO and the Market Participants and investigate customer inquiries/complaints or provide engineering and technical support to production staff during their investigations. Monitor, interpret and act as a resource regarding wholesale settlement activities. Contribute to the development of training packages relating to work methods, technology, techniques, and the policies, practices, and procedures relating to the established Market Rules.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

Maintain a current knowledge of settlement activities for the purposes of interpreting and applying market rules, programs, and contractual obligations as they apply to financial payments and penalties, and maintain an awareness of industry developments in settlement technologies and practices.

Develop appropriate processes, systems and procedures to perform settlement activities for the IESO-Administered Market. Produce user requirements for associated application software, perform acceptance testing and identify business requirements for hardware. Recommend/ facilitate appropriate settlements processes/adjustments to apply when data is missing/incorrect, contractual requirements are not met, and/or “ad hoc” situations.

On an on-going basis assist in reviewing the effectiveness of existing settlements processes. Develop and implement effectiveness and efficiency improvements, as necessary.

Produce business process and, where appropriate, system documentation for settlements activities.

Provide written procedural instructions, advice, guidance and training regarding the settlement process for the production staff.
In a typical day, you will
- Lead enhancements and changes to the commercial reconciliation system, requiring close collaboration with IT, internal stakeholders, and vendors.

Analyze market data pertaining to settlements as required, to monitor settlement outcomes, meet corporate financial reporting requirements and as negotiated with other business units.

Liaise with IESO teams and key stakeholders to drive value-added service opportunities. Provide guidance and supporting information to the development of programs that involve changes to settlement processes.

Perform other duties as required.
Role Requirements

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
Education:
- Requires knowledge of electrical theory, power systems analysis and control, mathematics, and computer sciences to carry out engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management of the wholesale settlement system and associated activities.
- Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports and process descriptions/user guides.
- This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of 4 years University education, or by having the equivalent.
Experience:
- Requires significant exposure to develop a good overall understanding of the operation of the IESO-Administered market, with particular emphasis on the reconciliation aspects.
- Requires considerable exposure to system and market operation practices and procedures, including legislation, resource utilization, and, system control techniques.
- Requires computer experience including exposure to statistical and database software, desktop software applications, computer data conversion, various PC-based query and calculation tools, and computer system interfaces.
- Requires experience in researching the practices and procedures of other jurisdictions, applying, testing and considering the merits of alternatives.
- Requires good customer service skills.
- A period of over 8 years, up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
