We are energized to grow, embracing opportunities to shape the future of a dynamic and evolving energy sector while advancing our careers. We are powered by teamwork, supported by diverse and passionate colleagues who foster respect, celebrate successes, and thrive on shared achievements. At the IESO, it’s not just what we do—it’s who we are!
Who we are
Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.
This role is a part of the Enabling Resources Program (ERP) within the Markets and Reliability business unit. This job is unionized.
What makes this role exciting
The energy sector is rapidly evolving, offering exciting new opportunities for those who want to make a difference.
The successful candidate will directly support ERP updates to the dispatch scheduling and optimization (DSO) system and supporting systems to ensure the efficient dispatch and operation of the grid. They will also support creating clarity on these changes within various market rules, manuals, and supporting materials needed to engage with the sector and govern requirements.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:
- Supporting and providing technical advice on market design and solution development efforts of ERP to produce more efficient market outcomes.
- Performing in-depth analysis of the dispatch, scheduling and optimization algorithms that drive the IESO’s energy markets (DAM, PD and RT) to derive enhancements to support ERP resources.
- Designing and executing studies to assess algorithmic behaviour, pricing outcomes, constraint modeling, and system performance under various market outcomes.
- Interpreting technical documentation for various audiences to ensure understanding and alignment with market design requirements.
In a typical day, you will work with solution vendors or other internal IESO subject matter experts to ensure solutions produce efficient market outcomes. This includes developing algorithms that will be implemented by the solution vendors, verifying proposals from vendors, as well as supporting the collection or producing test data to verify acceptable outcomes of solutions.
Right now, this position builds on the recently implemented foundation of the Market Renewal Project where a major revamp was achieved to support electricity market best practices. The specialist will create further enhancements to the market for emerging resources and puts you at the forefront to ensuring these resources are being utilized in an effective and efficient manner.
