  • The role of  Senior Specialist Business Analyst SME at the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) acts as a crucial link between technical teams and business needs, ensuring that the IESO's complex operations meet strategic objectives. This is achieved by driving business transformation through improving the IESOs business processes, technologies and tools. Furthermore defining future requirements, developing business cases for change, and ensuring new solutions align with business goals, ultimately contributing to a reliable, cost-effective electricity supply for Ontario.

  • The Senior Specialist, Business Analysis is responsible for supporting multiple, concurrent initiatives including, but not limited to, large scale, multi-million dollar enterprise wide projects, informal business unit initiatives, and advisory services to the SME and other business units.

  • The Senior Specialist, Business Analysis facilitates, elicits and secures approval for business objectives, performance measures, business process and information design, and requirements on information solutions by leveraging industry-aligned governance and analysis methods. The senior business analyst provides assistance and guidance to project teams to support the achievement of business objectives and delivery of business and system change.

  • The Senior Specialist acts in a leadership capacity within the Project & Contract Management team, supporting the Sr. Project & Portfolio Manager in defining and evolving the methods and techniques employed by the department. They provide coaching to other members of Project & Contract Management and provide a peer review of business analysis-related documents produced by Project & Contract Management as well as other departments.

 

What you’ll do


In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

 

  • Defines and implements requirements analysis approaches for projects;
  • Adheres to established requirement analysis approaches and business modeling methodologies, notation and templates;
  • Through different Business Analysis techniques facilitates the gathering and documentation of business requirements, including non-functional requirements and human performance requirements;
  • Creates/Updates Process Maps;
  • Analyzes current (“as-is”) business processes and, working with the business, updates “as-is” processes and  designs “to-be” business processes, as necessary, based on business needs;
  • Contributes to the authoring of the Project, or Program, Charter as an initiating and evolving document within the Portfolio and Project Management Lifecycle (PPMLC). Produces Process Models and Specifications;
  • Produces Information Models and Catalogues;
  • Captures requirements in an enterprise requirements traceability tool;
  • Conduct traceability activities to ensure that the all requirements are aligned and delivered throughout the project phases

 

In a typical day, you will...

  • Work with the project manager, project sponsor, process owner(s), and other team members to define metrics, where required;
  • Work with the business lead (or Subject Matter Expert), solution analyst, and solution developers to assess a solution’s ability to satisfy user requirements;
  • Acts as a liaison between business and IT representatives to effectively communicate business needs and technical details to ensure a clear and complete understanding and alignment;
  • Participate in transitioning the requirements to other project team members, and ensures a clear and complete understanding and alignment;
  • Review User Acceptance Test Plans, including test cases, for coverage of user requirements; Reviews all other relevant project deliverables, as needed. 
  • Keep current with latest trends in business analysis and maintains knowledge of current best practices in business analysis.
  • Review deliverables from other business analysts to ensure quality and alignment with Business Analysis Services procedures and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties (special assignments) as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

 

Education:

  • Bachelor in Computer Science or Business Information Technology
  • IIBA certification at the level of Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) is preferred.
  • Requires knowledge encompassing the relevant technical fields including computer science, engineering, technical service delivery, finance, risk management, and customer service.
  • Requires strong knowledge of business analysis theory, principles, and practices including the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA) best practices.
  • Requires knowledge of Business and IT business methods, procedures and organization structures in order to be aware of limitations that can be imposed and to recognize factors influencing the effective implementation of methodologies, risk and business analysis-related activities.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of 4 years of university education in an appropriate discipline or by having the equivalent education.

 

Experience:

  • Solid knowledge and thorough understanding of IIBA methodology, standards, techniques and tools.
  • Proven history of contributing to projects using both Waterfall and Agile methodologies.
  • Requires experience with the LDC meter to bill processes. Requires experience with the internal and external relationships with the IESO, Smart Metering Entity, Local Distribution Companies, the government and other industry agencies in accordance with required external protocols.
  • Proven ability to work in an ambiguous environment and collaborate across multiple areas in order to identify and achieve common business objectives.
  • Strong and tested business analysis skills stemming from both failed and successful project experience and lessons learned.
  • Demonstrated hands on experience achieving business objectives on large complex enterprise wide projects in a complex service delivery environment.
  • Solid understanding of software development lifecycle; project management lifecycle; business, solution and technology architecture; and IT and business operations.
  • Experience modelling processes using standard Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).
  • Minimum 8 years and up to and including 10 years of business analysis experience, with at least five years of experience conducting business analysis on multiple projects with increasing levels of complexity in a technical environment.
