The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.


The Opportunity


Senior Manager, Contracts and Compliance is accountable to the Director, Contract Management, to lead the team responsible for managing existing contracts for electricity resources IESO’s contracts range from a contract with Bruce Power, which is the largest operating nuclear power plant in the world, to tens of thousands of small solar contracts with individual homeowners. The team’s responsibilities include managing IESO’s rights and obligations for existing contracts in commercial operation


  • Managing contracts in commercial operations phase by enforcing contractual rights and obligations, resolution of any issues or disputes, and being the key contract for any matters of escalation. 
  • Maintaining strategic relationships with generators, contract counterparties and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading contractual due diligence efforts on IESO’s largest contracts for renewables, hydro-electricity, biomass and gas generation.
  • Leading a holistic compliance program to ensure contracted counterparties meet their obligations and IESO’s contractual rights are enforced.
  • Taking charge of disputes, including leading IESO’s efforts with assigned legal counsel in arbitrations and litigations.
  • Advising on development of contracting best practices and maintaining a broad knowledge base to enhance negotiating and contracting best practices.
  • Supporting negotiations for new or extended contracts, with input on existing contractual issues or opportunities for resolution of key issues.
  • Supporting development and management of programs to acquire, re-acquire, extend, and/or expand contracted resources
  • Overseeing design, implementation and maintenance of appropriate contract management processes to ensure compliance, timely reporting and issue escalation.
  • Supporting Contract Management on organizational resource acquisition initiatives.
  • Supporting and leading special projects as required, arising from government’s directives, new legislation, and/or IESO’s strategy and initiatives.


 What you'll be doing

  • Team Leadership - Manage 3 direct report supervisors and approximately 15 indirect staff reporting to the supervisors, including developing, coaching, mentoring and continually improving team results.
  • Project Management – manage processes, timelines, budgets, and coordinate resources and staff to produce deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Strategic Thinking - Working with the Director, Contract Management on setting the strategic direction for key contracts and any disputes.
  • Accountability - Lead the team to ensure compliance with contracted agreements by both parties throughout all stages of the contract.
  • Problem solving - Provide special focus on problem situations where disagreement and conflict may occur by using creative means and methods and developing new solutions by thinking outside the box.
  • Relationships - Develop and maintain excellent working relationships through regular contact with the IESO’s counterparties to avoid problem situations and negative surprises.
  • Coordination – Build and progress strong internal relationships with peers in Contract Management and other business units, including providing input to competitive procurement processes to ensure that contracts can be effectively managed.
  • Expert Advice – Provide expertise to IESO’s leadership team on contractual matters, negotiating issues and pre-emptively secure external professional, technical and legal resources when required.
  • Flexibility – Adapt to changing priorities and directions in a fast passed environment and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Communication – Lead discussions with senior executives, draft reports and present to senior leader, board of directors, and government officials.


What you will need to succeed


  • Experience in leading diverse teams and driving organizational change.
  • A strong grounding in legal, commercial, economic and/or technical aspects of the electricity sector, power generation and/or storage contracts.
  • Experience managing complex situations and maintaining constructive relationships.
  • Strong negotiating and persuasion skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Knowledge of the North American electricity sector, with strong emphasis on Ontario’s electricity sector.
  • Strong communications skills and ability to effectively present to Executive Leadership team, Government, and stakeholders.
  • An undergraduate degree in business, economics, engineering or other relevant field.
  • A graduate degree or a professional designation is desirable

The IESO commenced its 6 month Hybrid Work Model Pilot Program on March 28th, 2022. The Model allows for remote working up to three days per week, based on business needs. When working in the office, you will be located at Toronto.
