Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.

The Senior Advisor, Market Insights is a strategic, high-impact role that drives the growth and innovation of IESO’s Demand Side Management (DSM) programs and brand. You’ll turn complex data into clear, actionable insights that influence senior leadership, lead cross-functional teams to shape DSM program design strategies, champion a customer-focused approach across the organization, and drive adoption of DERs, electrification and load flexibility DSM measures. With opportunities to mentor emerging talent and contribute to energy innovation, this role is dynamic, visible, and purpose-driven.

 


What You'll Do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction and thought leadership in designing and executing research projects that supports DSM and broader IESO business needs.
  • Coordinate and advocate for DSM research priorities across IESO teams, promoting data sharing and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop and communicate strategies that drive program adoption, manage risk, and optimize outcomes, with regular reporting to senior leadership on related project work.
  • Mentor students and team members.

Financial

  • Works with the Supervisor, Market Insights to develop and manage  budgets
  • Monitor and manage project budgets to stay within annual budget expectations Responsible for cost-effectiveness and optimization of market research and other projects

Technical

  •  Serve as IESO’s subject matter expert on market research, customer data, and insights, as well as technical aspects of DSM including cost-effectiveness, rate structures, and engineering principles.
  • Serve as IESO’s subject matter expert on DSM measures, technologies and controls including DERs, Demand Response and Beneficial Electrification
  • Lead the process to identify information gaps which need to be filled to achieve business strategies, including disaggregating strategic questions and opportunities into researchable ones, and recommends knowledge-based solutions to close those gaps
  • Develops, initiate, and oversee market research to inform program development and stakeholder engagement across Ontario.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with research vendors and consultants to ensure high-quality, aligned deliverables.

Customer Focus

  • Contributes to and supports strategy planning and implementation with IESO staff, partners, and customers, ensuring alignment and impact.
  • Prepares and delivers clear, actionable insights and recommendations to internal teams, fostering understanding and informed decision-making.
  • Builds strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders and serves as an internal consultant on market and customer strategies.
  • Develops and shares strategic content with senior audiences, including the IESO Board and external industry forums, to promote the understanding of markets, customers and channels on business strategies and initiatives.

In a typical day, you will 

  • Each day begins by reviewing progress on several active research initiatives to ensure they are progressing as planned and to ensure they are prepared to provide updated to leadership as needed
  • The Senior Advisor will manage external consultants to complete these projects, to ensure accurate and usable results are generated in a timely manner.
  • Throughout the day, the Senior Advisor synthesizes findings into actionable insights and recommendations, preparing materials to share with internal and external stakeholders. These insights help inform strategic decisions and support the continuous improvement of energy programs.
  • In addition to managing current projects, the Senior Advisor actively scans the market for emerging technologies and innovative program design approaches. They initiate and lead new research efforts aimed at enhancing Save on Energy programs or developing entirely new offerings. This includes designing studies, coordinating stakeholders, and translating research into practical program evolution strategies.

Role Requirements
Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills. 
To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

  • Superior understanding of the social, political and economic ramifications of demand side management programs and results
  • Strong project management and program management experience in researching, designing, delivering and evaluating programs/products
  • Proven contract and vendor management experience for projects related to customer research and communication support, including developing and managing budgets
  • Ability to build relationships; excellent interpersonal skills to achieve results through influencing internal stakeholders without direct authority over them

The following would be an asset:

  • Community based social marketing and/or concept marketing experience 
  • Knowledge of energy issues and a professional designation in market research
