Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.


The opportunity


The IESO engages with the government, primarily the Ministry of Energy, on all aspects of our business, including planning, operations, procurements, contracts, programs, and communications. Under the direction of the Supervisor, Government Affairs, the Senior Advisor will support engagement with government at all levels, including municipal and Federal government and agencies, on the areas of our business with the highest risks, including generation and transmission procurements. The Senior Advisor will bring awareness to staff across the IESO of government matters that may impact them, provide direction on how to proceed, and manage IESO interactions with key teams in Federal, provincial, and municipal governments. 


As a key account manager with government on IESO matters, the Senior Advisor will collaborate with senior internal staff, key industry players, and senior government staff and officials around the development and implementation of initiatives. This position assists in the development and implementation of strategic direction and government engagement plans for the IESO to ensure business strategies and legislative objectives are met. Maintaining knowledge of industry developments that could be of interest to the IESO is a key aspect of this role, as well as identifying and assessing the value of new initiatives and opportunities to the IESO corporate and legislative objectives. The Senior Advisor will prepare technical reports and analysis of current and future energy policy, and will analyze and identify future policy developments and issues, related to potential IESO business needs and concerns.



What you'll do


  • Manage ongoing relationships between the IESO and government with the Supervisor and the Senior Manager.
  • Forge and foster relationships with senior staff at Federal, provincial, and municipal government departments and key agencies related to IESO’s business objectives and key projects. 
  • Meet/communicate/confer with senior staff from various business units and the Executive Leadership Team on issues that affect IESO business and legislative objectives and the current policy/legislative/regulatory climate in Ontario.
  • Assist in the development and manage the implementation of strategies and action plans using meetings or written correspondence, while relying on legislative policies, procedures, and protocols as well as an understanding of the policy drivers.
  • Advocate IESO business objectives before appropriate government staff using in-person meetings, oral/written material, relying on superior ability to write clearly and concisely, a mastery of legislative and regulatory policies, procedures, and protocols, an understanding of the IESO’s business objectives, and a keen ability to gain consensus among diverse groups to meet the company’s business plan and legislative objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal staff, government staff, and key industry players on the development and implementation of initiatives and be a driving force of action, identifying a path forward to resolve issues
  • Work with various internal and external personnel to resolve problems of strategy where differences of opinion may exist and influence others to a course of action suitable to the IESO’s corporate objectives. 
  • Provide advice and support to senior staff in identifying trends, risks, uncertainties, and actions or strategies required to ensure business plan objectives are met and IESO core values are upheld.
  • Research existing policies, laws and articulate orally or in writing to IESO employees using meetings, written correspondence, and existing regulations/statutes and relying on superior research ability and a mastery of applicable policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as required.



What you need to succeed


  • Knowledge of power system fundamentals, and understanding of the underlying fundamentals of the electricity sector.
  • Knowledge of politics, economics and corporate financial policies to lead projects and carry out work to advance and resolve issues.
  • Knowledge of business writing for briefings, memos, and supporting documentation, as well as technical writing for preparation and review of materials related to operations, procurements, contracts, planning and other reports, and public engagements.


This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training.


  • Experience in energy sector, policy environment and executive communication.
  • Industry knowledge, knowledge of IESO processes and programs, and knowledge of government operation and policy development processes. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and facilitation skills.
  • Evidence of communication, negotiation and presentation skills to present complex results in an understandable fashion, and to prepare effective reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment where different opinions and perspectives have to be managed, negotiated, and resolved diplomatically.
  • Proven track record of developing trust, mutual respect and co-operative working relationships.
  • Exemplifies comprehensive appreciation of, and strong personal commitment to, customer needs and corporate objectives.
  • A strong commitment to continuous improvement principles.

The minimum level of experience for the incumbent to perform at a satisfactory level of proficiency is 10+ years including the period of adjustment on the job itself.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Toronto location.
