Who we are 

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.


The Opportunity  

The Sr. Advisor, Partnerships and Innovation is responsible for the development and management of strong business relationships with potential and actual partners, customers, stakeholders, communities, government/agencies and others to support IESO’s innovation, research and development objectives. The Sr. Advisor will also identify and cultivate networks of interested parties/organizations through which projects and learnings can be developed and disseminated.  Drawing on these relationships and partnerships, the Sr. Advisor will develop and drive projects (within and outside the IESO) to address IESO’s research needs as they relate to innovation (e.g. grid modernization, distributed energy resources, new ways of doing business) and in support of IESO’s broader strategic objectives and mandate. The Sr. Advisor will identify and work to secure internal and external resources in support of these projects and will support the communication and implementation of lessons learned from IESO’s innovation work. The Sr. Advisor will also support the translation of lessons learned through innovation investments into broader electricity and energy sector policy.  The Sr. Advisor will also support the development, implementation and periodic review of IESO’s innovation strategy and work plan. 


What you'll be doing


  • Influence a culture of innovation internally and externally
  • Demonstrate by example the values of the IESO
  • Identify and drive opportunities for innovation that support IESO’s ability to carry out its mandate within the electricity and broader energy sector
  • Champion partnerships and networks to drive IESO strategic priorities



  • Plan for, develop and manage multi-level relationships with key customers, stakeholders, communities, and other potential/actual partners and sector organizations.
  • Plan, develop, implement and manage projects to address IESO’s identified research needs with regards to innovation, seeking out and working with others internally and externally as applicable to generate necessary learnings.
  • Supports the development, implementation and periodic review of IESO’s innovation strategy and work plan
  • Participate on project/advisory teams internally and externally to provide input from lessons learned through project work, engagement with partners and research where applicable.
  • Manage and support the undertaking of research, analytical support, monitoring and reporting to support innovation activities.
  • Support awareness and understanding of IESO’s innovation work by communicating the outcomes of this work through internal and external channels as applicable.
  • Develop and maintain a broad understanding of IESO’s work in order to identify opportunities for innovation internally and externally.
  • Identify and work to secure internal and external resources for IESO’s innovation work, including and not limited to developing written proposals for funding and other types of support from other organizations
  • Help to translate lessons learned through innovation investments into broader electricity and energy sector policy by disseminating lessons  (through written and verbal materials) policy makers, stakeholders and other interested parties
  • Identify, develop and manage networks of interested parties/organizations through which projects and learnings can be developed and disseminated. 


 Partner Focus

  •  Identify and understand the needs of potential and actual partners (external and internal) as they relate to IESO’s innovation objectives and broader mandate.
  • Develop strong relationships (internally and externally) in support of innovation within the IESO and broader electricity and energy sectors.
  • Help to develop a research agenda/plan in support of innovation within the IESO and broader electricity and energy sectors.
  • Lead the development and implementation of projects/solutions to generate learnings necessary for partners (internal and external) with regards to IESO’s innovation, research and development work
  • Communicate the needs and interests of potential/actual partners within the IESO to help align IESO’s innovation work with those needs/interests as they relate to IESO’s mandate.
  • Provide sound advice/guidance/information directly to customers and others on issues related to their relationship with the IESO.
  • Support external parties in understanding and accessing IESO’s innovation programs, projects, research and learnings.
  • Make recommendations for and guide others with the implementation of improvements to IESO’s innovation funding tools to meet the needs of IESO and its partners (actual and potential).
  • Plan for and support implementation (internally and externally) of lessons learned through research and development.


What you need to succeed

  • Post-secondary degree in energy, business, environmental studies or a technical discipline is preferred; a post graduate degree is an asset
  • The education required to complete the responsibilities associated with the position is typically obtained through 4 years of university training
  • The minimum level of experience for the incumbent to perform at a satisfactory level of
  • proficiency is 8-10 years including the period of adjustment on the job itself
  • 8 – 10 years’ of relevant experience in the energy sector with experience in policy development, translation (to program/projects), and stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated awareness and knowledge of political factors that can affect and influence the direction of innovation initiatives.
  • A general understanding of IESO’s structure and functional areas is needed.
  • Excellent project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Requires experience in dealing with customers/partners (internal & external to the IESO) in a professional and service focused environment. Requires experience to effectively deal with complex inquiries as well as escalated and sensitive situations.
  • Experience writing proposals for funding and grants.
  • Strong strategic and tactical thinking abilities
  • Experience with strategic planning is an asset.
  • Superior communication skills (oral, written and presentation)..
  • Exceptional organizational skills and time management skills.
  • Excellent research, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates an ability to deal well with change and ambiguity.
  • Influence and negotiations skills; ability to persuade or influence others to adopt or accept a point of view or take a course of action.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as a team player and/or team leader.
