Who we are
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The Opportunity
As a member of the Security department, the Security Watch Person performs security activities to guard IESO facilities. These activities may include conducting security foot patrols, monitoring a computerized access control system, responding to/investigating all alarms and breaches of security, as well as responding to fire, medical, bomb threat or other site-related emergencies.
Working Hours: 16 hours base; up to 24 hours maximum per week
The incumbent will primarily work weekend shifts and will provide holiday coverage.
What you'll be doing
- Monitor a computerized access control system, including closed circuit TV surveillance system covering all IESO locations, in accordance with operating manuals, oral and written instructions, corporate policies and procedures, and established practices. Notify Supervisor of any defective equipment, malfunction, and the like in accordance with departmental procedures and issue trouble tickets.
- Respond to and investigate all alarms and breaches of security and take appropriate authorized action. Prepare reports regarding reported theft, damage, disturbances or other infractions/crime and submit to Supervisor for review or further action.
- Conduct foot patrols of building, grounds, perimeters, and environs, to enforce trespassing regulations, and to check for, damage to fences and gate barriers and any safety hazards.
- Maintain a shift log of newsworthy security-related information, as outlined in instructions.
- Respond to fire, medical, physical threats or other emergencies by acting as response coordinator. Assist with evacuations or searches, provide first aid if safe to do so, and secure affected areas. Assist the police and fire departments as necessary. Re-activate all magnetic locks after a building fire alarm activations are reset.
- Perform other duties as required.
What you'll need
- Requires a knowledge of English to facilitate writing investigative and detailed shift logs/reports and for proper oral communication when dealing with employees and the general public, and to comprehend a variety of procedures, statutes and instruction (e.g., Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, Trespass Act, etc.). Requires a knowledge of keyboard operation and basic computer skills.
- This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of Grade 10 in a Secondary, Commercial or Technical School, or by having the equivalent level of education.
- Previous experience in the security function to become familiar with security acts and regulations, governing procedures and policies, routines and other security guard responsibilities relating to the enforcement of trespassing regulations, control of vehicular and pedestrian access and performance of initial and follow-up investigations of incidents breaching security regulations.
- Full training to meet Security Guard Training Program requirements prescribed by the Ontario Government is required.
- Understanding of the various site policies and procedures that would have an impact on maintaining a secured environment.
- Requires on-the-job experience to become familiar with processes and procedures relating to photo access cards and staff access to company controlled assets.
- Familiarity with the monitoring of a computerized security system, including closed circuit TV surveillance system to monitor a multiple site security system.
- Understading of functions and responsibilities associated with the protection and safeguard of IESO properties to provide orientation and guidance to staff and others
A period of six to nine months is considered necessary to gain this experience.
