Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. This is a unionized position that falls within the Quality Assurance Department in the Information and Technology Services Business Unit

  • Assist in the provision of life cycle management of information technology solutions to the core component of IESO business in operating the IESO Administered Markets and providing reliable operation of the electrical system (IESO controlled grid).


What you’ll do

 

In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

 

  • Assist/contribute to the development and testing of integrated computer based information solutions for business and operations processes for the reliable operation of the power system and for other administration needs of the IESO Administered Markets. Perform analysis of customer requirements and their testability, the recommendation of functional specifications, and the preparation of recommended information solutions (ie, impacting areas of software, hardware, communications and business processes).

  • Contribute to the management and evolution of existing information systems and tools related to the market operation, supply, security and settlement services related to the management of the power system by contributing to enhancements to allow additional functionality, improved reliability/maintainability and problem correction.

  • Assist/contribute to the identification of opportunities for information solutions that will allow effective and economic benefits for customers. Address the overall solution in terms of quality, communications, data sources, software tools, integration with existing functions, user interfaces, algorithms, etc. 

  • Assist in the monitoring and scrutiny of assigned projects for the development and expansion of information systems and tools.

  • Assist in the provision of project management support and quality assurance to projects or teams involved in the expansion and improvement and maintenance of information systems and tools.

 

In a typical day, you will 

 

  • Contribute to and carry out close customer relationships and be alert to identify potential improvements to existing systems and to propose new information system requirements. 

  • Contribute as directed to the development of strategic plans and standards.

  • Contribute with peers and associates to advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills within their respective area of expertise.

  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Role Requirements

To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

 

Education:

  • Requires a strong academic knowledge of computer science and associated subjects, including a strong theoretical knowledge pertinent to the specialist areas of the technical or business operations of the electricity market and administration processes related to the power system delivery. Requires communication skills, including report or business presentation skills.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline or by having the equivalent education.

 

Experience:

  • Requires some exposure to the overall power system operation and electricity market operation as might be acquired through some association to the power system operation and market operation. Requires some experience as applicable to the particular specialty of the group.  
  • Background could be related to the fields of:
    1. utilization of generation resources, including interconnections,
    2. secure operation of bulk power system,
    3. reliability,
    4. means of operation including control equipment, techniques and procedures for the practice of operating,
    5. market entry, maintenance and exit
    6. bidding and market information management
    7. market scheduling and dispatch,
    8. metering and market settlement,
    9. billing and market funds administration,
    10. prudential risk management
    11. forecast and assessment  
    12. market administration such as dispute resolution, waiver process, compliance and surveillance.  
  • Other areas of background experience could be in the areas of
    1. design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components,
    2. analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solving power system problems,
    3. some familiarity with power system operation, practices and policies,
    4. district operating and system requirements,
    5. concepts of power system operation including technical features of equipment and facilities, high-tension transmission and system interchange between systems,
    6. familiarity with the Market Rules,
    7. design concepts for market scheduling and dispatch algorithm and equations,
    8. familiarity with market and internal bid-to-bill business processes and procedures,
    9. design concept for financial risk management at the IESO administered market level
    10. familiarity with various market administration processes and procedures.
  • A period of over four years, up to and including six years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
