- This role is part of the Infrastructure and Operations team responsible for delivering secure and reliable network connectivity to support the IESO’s critical IT infrastructure. It ensures system reliability by safeguarding the infrastructure that underpins real-time operations, market functions, and planning activities.

Assist in the design, installation, and technical support functions for the IESO common infrastructure network and telecommunication facilities including the interfaces with market participants at the IESO Control Centres and supporting field locations.
- Composition of IESO common infrastructure:
- TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES consist of data/voice communications networks supporting the following areas: collecting and providing field data and control functions for power system operation, Market Participant Networks, Market Services, settlement services, call centre and office telephone systems.
- COMPUTER NETWORK FACILITIES are tightly integrated and linked with other IESO and non-IESO facilities, consist of a complex network of routers, switches, servers, storage arrays, firewalls/ security devices and Wide Area Network (WAN) links.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:
- Assist in the design, installation, check into service, maintenance, modification and upgrade of IESO common infrastructure facilities to maintain existing standards and to meet the changing business needs.
- Contribute to the evaluation, planning, and development of upgrade/enhancement proposals related to IESO common infrastructure. These proposals are based on assessments of new and emerging user requirements, analysis of systems and equipment performance data.
- Participate in the development and design of evolutionary voice/data infrastructure solutions to meet IESO business requirements. In conjunction with others, provide solutions from concept, through technical evolution and feasibility to final implementation.
- Assist in carrying out technical and operational support (Tier 2 and 3) for IESO IT infrastructure including operating system support for servers, databases, as well as network switches, routers and firewalls.
- Assist in the implementation of IESO security policies by creating and configuring servers, firewalls, routers and other network security equipment. Contribute to the evaluation of risks and the effectiveness of systems in enforcing these policies. Investigate security issues, recommend and implement changes to mitigate/reduce known risks.
- As assigned, conduct necessary actions for the operation, support and administration of common infrastructure server facilities to meet IESO business needs. This involves a sound understanding of the design, implementation and operating philosophy of various desktop products, operating systems and server equipment used to provide these common services.
In a typical day, you will
- Perform analysis and respond system incidents and related problems. Troubleshoot, isolate and resolve incidents and problems within guidelines. Perform system administration; provide support to personnel involved in system administration activities.
- Assist in the provision of project management support to projects or teams involved in the expansion and improvement of information systems and tools.
- Contribute as directed to the development of strategic plans and standards, procedures and tests.
- As part of a team, contribute to help associates advance their learning and facilitate their problem solving skills within their respective area of expertise.
- Perform other duties as required.
Role Requirements

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
Education:
- Requires a knowledge of computer science or computer systems engineering in order to design, develop, and support small to large-scale computer systems and networks. Specific knowledge would include telecommunication concepts, voice system architecture, networking and system administration.
- This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate discipline or by having the equivalent education.
Experience:
- Requires background experience in the design, development, and support of computer systems, such as may be gained through exposure to the following areas:

- Computer system architecture, design, configuration and integration;
- Local Area and Wide Area networking
- Telecommunications devices, voice/PBX and digital/network communications equipment;
- Administration and use of standard or proprietary computer operating systems;
- Development of computer applications using standard development languages;
- Support of small to large scale computer systems;
- Desktop computer configuration;
- Network servers administration/support and/or firewalls/network security devices.
- Field metering and relaying
- Requires some experience as may be gained through exposure to IESO infrastructures as they relate to power system/energy market operations. Requires experience in preparing technical reports and procedures.
- A period of over four years, up to and including six years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
