  • Provide leadership and technical computer algorithm support for the design and life cycle management of information systems/tools to ensure efficient operation of the IESO Administered Markets and reliable operation of the electrical system (IESO controlled grid). Advise projects that initiate technical direction or that relates to data requirements, system design, computing techniques, software coding, systems integration, research and training. Maintain client satisfaction and cooperative relations with technical staff, Identify the potential advantages in revising existing products/services. Provide consulting support to clients and internal staff in search of solutions.

 

What you’ll do


In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

 

  • Develop integrated and complex advanced computer based information solutions for business and operations processes for to the reliable operation of the power system and for other administrative needs of IESO Administered Markets.  Undertake studies for the analysis of customer betterments, the formation of functional specifications and the development of a complete information solutions (including impacting areas of software, hardware, communications, or business processes as they relate to individual contributors or project management).
  • Advise on the design of the optimal computing algorithm considering solution performance & precision, input data sparsity & quality and feasibility etc.
  • Manage the evolution of existing complex advanced information systems and tools related to the market operation, supply, security and settlement services related to the management of the power system by devising/implementing enhancements to provide additional functionality, improved reliability and/or maintainability and problem correction.
  • Command a thorough knowledge of internal/external customers' business.  Develop a close relationship with customers to identify potential improvements to existing systems and to identify new or innovative information system requirements.  Provide extensive consultation to customers.
  • Identify opportunities for information solutions that will provide substantial benefits for customers. Address the total solution in terms of communications, data sources, software tools, integration with existing functions, user interfaces, algorithms etc. 

 

In a typical day, you will

 

  • Undertake the management of projects for the development and expansion of complex/advanced information systems and tools.  Provide technical leadership to such projects and/or teams. 
  • Contribute in the development of strategic plans and standards. 
  • Act as a consultant or mentor to others to advance their learning and to facilitate their problem solving skills within their respective areas of expertise.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Role Requirements

To succeed in this role, you’ll need: 

 

Education:

  • Requires a strong academic knowledge of computer science and associated subjects, including a strong theoretical knowledge pertinent to the specialist areas of the technical or business operations of the electricity market and administration processes related to the power system delivery.  Requires communication skills, including report or business presentation skills.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline or by having the equivalent education.
     

Experience:

  • Requires significant exposure to the overall power system operations and electricity market operation.  Requires specific experience related to specialties of the group.  Exposure will be related to the fields of:
    • utilization of generation resources, including interconnections,      
    • secure operation of bulk power system,
    • reliability,
    • means of operation, including control equipment, staffing techniques and procedures for the practice of operating,
    • market entry, maintenance and exit
    • bidding and market information management
    • market scheduling and dispatch,
    • metering and market settlement,
    • billing and market funds administration,
    • prudential risk management,
    • forecast and assessment; and,
    • market administration such as dispute resolution, waivers, compliance and surveillance.  
  • Expertise can be in the areas of:  
    • design concepts as they relate to the functions and characteristics of power system components,
    • analytical studies and the application of computer techniques to solving power system problems (e.g. State Estimator, Power Flow), forecasting problems (e.g. demand forecasting), energy bidding (e.g. Day Ahead Optimization, Capacity & Transmission rights auction).
    • familiarity with power system operation, practices and policies, 
    • district operating and system requirements,
    • concepts of power system operation including technical features of equipment and facilities, high-tension transmission, system interconnection and methods of attaining efficiency in power production and interchange between systems,
    • familiarity with the Market Rules,
    • design concepts for market scheduling and dispatch algorithm and equations,
    • familiarity with market and internal bid-to-bill business processes and procedures, (9) design concept for financial risk management at the IESO administered market level; and,
    • familiarity with various market administration processes and procedures.
  • A period of over eight years, up to and including ten years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
